ABOUT US

Central Institute of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants, popularly known as CIMAP, is a frontier plant research laboratory of Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR). Established originally as Central Indian Medicinal Plants Organisation (CIMPO) in 1959, CIMAP is steering multidisciplinary high quality research in biological and chemical sciences and extending technologies and services to the farmers and entrepreneurs of medicinal and aromatic plants (MAPs) with its research headquarter at Lucknow and Research Centres at Bangalore, Hyderabad, Pantnagar and Purara. CIMAP Research Centres are aptly situated in different agro-climatic zones of the country to facilitate multi-location field trials and research. Technology and Business Development

Technology and Business Development (TBD) division at CSIR-CIMAP has the prime objective of linking the medicinal and aromatic plants (MAPs) science with society. The major activities of the department includes conducting awareness and dissemination campaigns on cultivation and processing of MAPs, consultancy , technical service and technology licensing for the development of MAPs based entrepreneurship, demonstration of MAPs cultivation, study of the economics of MAPs cultivation and impact study of adoption of improved varieties and agro-technologies of MAPs.

The department played significant role in the popularization of improved varieties of major medicinal and aromatic plants such as mints, lemongrass, citronella, palmarosa, vetiver, geranium, Artemisia annua, Withania somnifera etc. , herbal based formulations for mosquito repellence, skin care and disinfection, improved distillation units and process for isolation of artemsinin besides dissemination of cultivation technologies of economically viable medicinal and aromatic plants resulting into improvement of socio-economic status of thousands of farmers of the country.

Significant Achievements

•Process technology for the processing of Mentha arvensis oil & D.M.O for production of menthol crystals ( Flakes & bold) and value added products

•The department is working on extraction and isolation of lead molecules for bioactive studies, pilot scale evaluation of new varieties, up scaling of process technologies for techno economic evaluations, designing of extraction and distillation units for farmers, industries and entrepreneurs and transferring of technologies to the industries.

•The department is also doing R&D on value added bio-chemicals production from spent aromatic (lignocellulosic) biomasses.
