The invention relates to the development of green process for the preparation of hydroxymethyl furfural (HMF) from cellulose isolated from spent aromatic biomass. HMF is a key intermediate substance useful as substitute of petro chemicals. As cellulose is the major constituent (40-50%) of the spent aromatic biomass (hemicellulose, 25-30% and lignin 15-20%) it is being used for synthesis of HMF. The synthesis of HMF from isolated cellulose is  an economical process and is completely environment-friendly which describes the development of sustainable, integrated and holistic strategy for utilizing the waste aromatic biomass to produce various valuable bio-chemicals.

An improved process of analytical and quantitative isolation of withaferin-A from Withania somnifera and other plants has been developed in which extraction solvent system consisting of a defined admixture of water and alcohol (preferably 60% alcohol and 40% water) for the dry plant material and from 60% to 80% alcohol for fresh plant material. The invented extract composition lead to better / improved yields and accurate quantitative estimations of withaferin A existent in plants or in material. The new process is valuable and advantageous for standardization of botanicals and metabolomic characterization of plants.

The invention relates to an improved process for one pot conversion of artemisinin into artelinic acid, which reduces the three step (Three pots) conversion of artemisinin to artelinic acid in one step (one pot). Artelinic acid and sodium artelinate are customary names for p[(12-dihydroartemisininoxy)methyl] benzoate and sodium p-[12-dihydroartemisininoxy]methyl] benzoate, respectively. The sodium artelinate is considered to be best candidate drug amongst the available water soluble analogues of this class for the treatment of multi drug resistant and cerebral malaria.

 10 An improved economical process for the isolation of hepatoprotective agent oleanolic acid from Lantana camara

 India/232584/19.3.2009 Highly economical process has been developed for the isolation of oleanolic acid from the roots of Lantana camara which completely omits the use of expensive and highly tedious column chromatography and gives 1% yield which is three times more than the previously reported methods (US Patent No. 6,884, 908). Whole root biomass can be used in the new method as only root bark could be used in previous reports thereby making it further economical. Use of single solvent for extraction is also beneficial as solvent can be reused and/or recycled.  The method uses simple precipitation and crystallization processes which are easy, quick and highly economical.

The present invention provides a single pot process for the preparation of artesunic acid from artemisinin involving reduction followed by etherification of the reduced product at room temperature. The conversion of artemisinin into crude artesunic acid followed by workup and purification to yield pure product takes 6-10 hours as compared to previously reported methods (about 24-72 hours) and thus is less time consuming. The yield of final product in the present invention i.e. pure artesunic acid it upto 96% (w/w).

The invention relates to an improved method for the preparation of artemether which is useful for the treatment of uncomplicated, severe complicated and multi-drug resistant malaria. The previous methods carry some disadvantages being less cost effective and more time consuming as compared to the present invention. Moreover, benzene, a carcinogenic solvent used in the previous methods is not acceptable according to the health standards. Further, all the previous methods require at least two separate steps to convert artemisinin into ethers i.e. reduction of the artemisinin into dihydroartemisinin in the first pot followed by isolation of dihydroartemisinin and then comes the second step of conversion of dihydroartemisinin into different ethers in the second pot. However, the present invention provides an efficient method for conversion of artemisinin into artemether in one pot in just 4 hours as compared to 24-72 hours in previous methods.

The invention related to a novel and efficient method for the faster production of superior quality vermicompost from the distillation wastes of aromatic/medicinal crops which have otherwise no economic value and are also not preferred by animals. No pre decomposition is required and compost developed by this method contains higher concentration of micro as well as macro nutrients. This method is significantly quicker and the process also results in the rapid multiplication of worms, thereby leading to production of vermicompost with higher nutrient status.
